THE pickleball bug has bitten everyone, and expect the sport’s popularity to further soar in Cebu.

Expected to fuel the sport’s increasing popularity is the “in10s” Games pickleball tournament, which will fire off on August 2 at the Bright Academy in Barangay Banilad, Cebu City.

Following in the footsteps of her respected sportsman father, Jana Pages, the former Philippine No. 4 junior tennis player and daughter of sports organizer and former Cebu City Sports Commission chief John Pages, is organizing the one-day tournament.

Pickleball, which combines the elements of ping-pong, tennis, and badminton, is the first sport that will be featured in the in10s Games tournament series.

Jana explained that in10s, pronounced “intense”, plays on the words “in tens” as all games will revolve around number 10.

For the upcoming pickleball tournament, Jana said each game will last just 10 minutes. The team that scores the most points after 10 minutes will be declared winner. In case of tie, a one-and-done will be applied to determine the winner.

“Instead of traditional scoring, every game is on the clock. It’s more intense, more fun, and team-oriented,” Jana said. “It’s really about reimagining the sport. In10s is not just a name, it’s the concept. We want players to go all out in 10-minute bursts. We want to challenge how the game is played.”

Jana disclosed that 16 teams have signed up for the pickleball tournament. Each team is composed of four players—two men and two women.

There will be two categories—the 18-34 years old and the 35-above.

Jana expressed confidence that the pickleball tournament

will be a big hit.

“I haven’t seen a sport that is so inclusive like pickleball. I saw 13 year olds playing in one court and 50 to 55 years olds in another court. Not many sports can bring in a diverse number of players. The whole family can play,” she said.

For now, no cash prizes will be at stake as winners will only receive medals.

But Jana clarified that cash prizes will soon be offered to winners in in10s Games tournaments.

“The dynamics change when cash prizes are at stake. But soon, cash prizes will be given but they will go to charity institutions chosen by the winners,” Jana added.(CCM)
