SCORCHING temperatures are expected to intensify across parts of the country, with weather officials warning that heat index levels in several areas may reach ranges considered hazardous to human health.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Catarman in Northern Samar, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City, and Dumangas in Iloilo are forecast to hit a heat index of up to 42 degrees Celsius.

A heat index falling under the “danger” category ranges from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius. At this level, prolonged exposure, particularly when engaging in physical activity, may lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke.

Pagasa urged the public to limit exposure to direct sunlight, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours. It also advised wearing light, breathable clothing and taking regular breaks in shaded or cooler areas to reduce the risk of heat stress.

Meanwhile, a tropical storm is being monitored outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Pagasa weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said in a Philtar report that tropical storm Sinlaku was located 2,730 kilometers east of northeastern Mindanao and remains nearly stationary.

He added that the system has maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 105 kph.

If it enters PAR, it will be named Caloy and will become the third tropical cyclone to enter the country this year.

Based on current forecasts, the storm may enter PAR by late next week and is expected to recurve between April 16 and 22, likely staying far from land and not affecting the country.(MyTVCebu)
