A GRASSROOTS basketball tournament that aims to provide aspiring athletes an avenue to further hone their skills has gotten a much-needed shot in the arm.

Cebu City mayor-elect Nestor Archival has pledged to support Visayas G Hoops, which will showcase young dribblers from Cebu and neighboring provinces.

“I know that it will be the inaugural season of Visayas G Hoops and I hope and pray that this will last and continue in the coming years,” said Archival.

Spearheaded by tournament director Rocky Alcoseba, tournament director Rey Cañete, and tournament consultant Van Halen Parmis, the league will be held from June 20-22 featuring 3-Under boys, 15U boys, and 25U women categories.

Archival said he is throwing his support behind the league as sports will be one of the priorities under his administration.

“Being the mayor-elect of Cebu, I promise to Rocky that I will be supporting this tournament. We will have sports programs in my term.” Archival said.

Archival added that the purpose of staging the tournament is something that has to be supported. He said he believed that the tournament will open a lot of opportunities for young basketball players who aspire to make it to the big leagues.

“So to the players in Cebu and neighboring islands, I encourage you to join. This is good for the youth because when they play in Cebu, they will be able to showcase their talent and they might be discovered by schools and offer them scholarships,” Archival said.

Powered by VISTECH and presented by Poxel Graphics and Apparels, teams from Cebu City, Tacloban City, Ormoc City, Bohol, Cagayan de Oro City, and Samar have already signified their intention to join.

Pending the formal launch, the venue of the tournament is yet to be announced.(CCM)
