THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) clarified that the midterm elections will proceed as originally scheduled.
The poll body issued the clarification following the circulation of fake graphics online claiming that the 2025 midterm elections had been moved to an earlier date.
“Tuloy na tuloy ang halalan sa Lunes, May 12, 2025,” the Comelec said.
The agency clarified that the circulating graphic is “fake news.” The image falsely claimed that a new election date had been set for May 10 due to “intense heat reported by PAGASA on May 12.” It even used the official Comelec logo to appear legitimate.
“Fake news ang graphics na kumakalat ukol sa paglipat ng halalan sa May 10, 2025. Hindi ito galing sa tanggapan ng Commission on Elections, at hindi ipinost sa official at verified social media channels ng Comelec,” the agency warned.
In related news, another misleading graphic that circulated online falsely claimed that bringing a national ID is mandatory on election day.
The Comelec clarified that voters will only be asked to present a valid ID if their identity cannot be confirmed through the Election Day Computerized Voters’ List.
The agency reminded the public to verify information through legitimate and official sources. It also cautioned the public against the deliberate spread of misinformation, citing that it is an offense under Section 261(z)(11) of the Omnibus Election Code.
As the election draws near, the agency reiterated that voting hours will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with early voting hours for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant voters from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.(John Ryan Ledesma, CTU-TC Intern)
