ALEX Eala made heads turn in Florida when she took down a highly touted opponent in the second round of the Miami Open early Saturday (PHilippine time), March 22.

Eala completed a giant upset when she defeated world No. 25 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, 7-6 (2), 7-5, to book a seat in the third round of the prestigious tournament.

Ranked no. 140 in the world, Eala, who made it to the tournament as one of the seven wildcard entries, displayed tremendous composure to stun Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open champion.

Living up to her lofty billing, the 27-year-old Ostapenko converted six aces in the match that took one hour and 53 minutes to complete.

Ostapenko shot herself in the foot by committing five double faults while Eala only had three.

Coming off a 6-3, 7-6 (3) upset win over higher-ranked American Katie Volynets in the first round, the Filipino tennis sensation had three aces.

After scoring two impressive wins, Eala will be tested anew when she faces American fifth seed Madison Keys in the third round.

Keys reached the third round by dominating Elina Avanesyan of Armenia, 6-3, 6-3.

Keys had just won her first Grand Slam when she snatched the Australian Open title last January. The 30-year-old athlete was a finalist at the 2017 US Open, a semifinalist at the 2018 French Open, a two-time quarterfinalist in the Wimbledon.(CCM)
