OVER 30,000 residents were affected when heavy rainfall fueled by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) resulted in severe flooding across three towns in Maguindanao del Sur over the weekend.

The affected areas include Datu Abdullah Sangki, Shariff Aguak, and Datu Saudi Ampatuan, where 6,023 households have been affected, a report by Inquirer.net said.

The town of Datu Salibo has been completely inundated, with all 17 villages underwater. Due to its geographical location in the Liguasan marshland, the area is prone to flooding.

Authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage and counting the number of affected residents.

An aerial survey was conducted by the Philippine Air Force's Tactical Operations Group 12, accompanied by Office of Civil Defense-Bangsamaro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OCD-BARMM) regional director Joel Mamon, to evaluate the damage caused by the flooding.

The flooding has caused significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture in the affected areas. A vital bridge in Mamasapano town has been damaged, disrupting transportation and mobility.

Crops such as corn, rice, and peanuts have been submerged in floodwaters, with the Department of Agriculture yet to assess the total damage.

The OCD-BARMM is working closely with other government agencies to provide assistance to the affected communities. Temporary shelters, food packs, and basic necessities have been provided to displaced persons.

Authorities are also monitoring the weather conditions, advising residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and prepared for possible evacuation.

Flash floods have also affected Sarangani province, prompting evacuations in Alabel town. The municipal disaster risk reduction and management council, along with rescue teams and barangay officials, have ensured the safety of affected families. Although no casualties have been reported, authorities remain vigilant and are providing necessary assistance to those affected.

Validation of the numbers of affected families and the total cost of damage is ongoing. (Sheila Mae Allego, CTU-TC Intern)
