A HONG Kong-bound passenger was intercepted at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) after authorities discovered P1.149 million in undeclared Philippine currency inside his baggage during a routine screening at Terminal 2 on July 14.

The 26-year-old Filipino, a resident of Barangay Basak, Cebu City, was stopped at the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) checkpoint when X-ray operators spotted suspicious images that resembled bundles of cash.

The incident was immediately referred to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP).

A joint verification led to the discovery of P1,149,000 in bills.

The passenger failed to declare the amount, which exceeds the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ limit of P500,000 for outbound transport of local currency.

He also refused to sign the held baggage receipt and later told authorities he was unaware of the regulation.

The BOC took custody of the cash and transferred it to their office at the Terminal 2 Arrival Area for proper disposition and further investigation.

MCIA, located in Lapu-Lapu City, is the Philippines’ second busiest airport and serves as the main international gateway for the Central and Southern Philippines, with Terminal 2 handling most international departures and arrivals.

Brig. Gen. ason Capoy, AVSEGROUP Director, said the incident reflects the strong coordination and alertness of airport security forces.

"This incident reflects the strong coordination and alertness of our security forces. AVSEGROUP remains committed to ensuring safe and secure airport operations at all times,” Capoy said.(MyTVCebu)
