PRIVATE hospitals across the country are seeing a rise in patients with influenza-like illnesses (ILIs), the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. (PHAPI) reported this week.

PHAPI president Dr. Jose Rene de Grano said hospital admissions for flu and flu-like symptoms have gone up by around 10 to 15 percent in recent weeks.

Most of those seeking treatment are children and elderly patients, while adults with mild symptoms are opting for home care.

“This increase is typical during the colder months and rainy season,” De Grano said in a Philstar report. “But we remind the public not to take flu symptoms lightly, especially for those with underlying conditions.”

The Department of Health (DOH) confirmed a similar trend nationwide, noting a steady rise in influenza-like illness cases since late September. While there is no official flu outbreak declared, health officials are closely monitoring hospital admissions to prevent overcrowding.

Doctors attribute the increase to unpredictable weather, humidity, and people staying indoors for longer periods, which allow viruses to spread more easily.

Health experts continue to urge the public to observe preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, proper coughing etiquette, and wearing masks in crowded areas.

Vaccination against influenza is also highly recommended for senior citizens, children, and those with chronic illnesses.

“We can avoid severe flu complications through simple precautions and timely vaccination,” De Grano added. “It’s better to act early before hospitals become overwhelmed.”(Victoria Diana USJ-R Comm Intern)
