CEBU residents planning beach trips or outdoor weekend activities may want to keep umbrellas close, as state weather forecasters warned of scattered rains and possible thunderstorms over the next few days.
Engr. Al Quiblat, chief of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) โ Mactan, warned that the low-pressure area (LPA) and the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) are expected to bring light to moderate rains and occasional heavy downpours to parts of the Visayas, including Cebu, over the weekend.
"Regardless of the LPA's movement, Central Visayas will still experience rainfall. We are expecting rain showers over the weekend," Quiblat said.
As of 3 a.m. on April 29, Pagasa reported that the LPA was located 695 kilometers east of Davao City and remains embedded in the ITCZ.
Quiblat noted that two scenarios are possible for the LPA: it may either move across the Visayas toward Palawan, or it could shift closer to Eastern Visayas before moving out of the country.
Regardless of its path, Quiblat said rain-bearing clouds will likely still affect Central Visayas.
Although the LPA has a moderate chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone in the coming days, its trough or extension is already causing weather disturbances.
The trough is expected to bring scattered rains and thunderstorms, particularly in the Caraga and Davao regions.
Meanwhile, the ITCZ is also expected to bring scattered rains to the rest of Mindanao and Palawan.
Pagasa has issued a warning for possible flash floods or landslides in low-lying and mountainous areas due to moderate to heavy rainfall.
As a result, residents and those planning outdoor activities are advised to stay alert and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather.(TGP)
