WINSTON Bingil erupted for 38 points to lead the sizzling University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers to an 85-63 drubbing of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats on Sunday, October 4, at the Cebu Coliseum.

Bingil went 10-for-23 from the two-point zone and 5-of-10 from the three-point area for a high 65 percent shooting clip. Adding five rebounds and one assist, Bingil didn’t have a single turnover in a stellar 20 minutes of action that helped UV stretch its winning streak to six.

Ivan Clark Alsola backed Bingil with 11 points as UV seized the solo top spot in the team standings of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 26 college division basketball tournament.

UV’s sizzling run came after it started the tournament with a shock 68-81 loss to the University of San Carlos Warriors.

Wayne Victor Gementiza piled up 11 points and Jerian Marc Abello added 10 for the Wildcats, who dropped to 4-4 (win-loss).

In the other college division match, the University of Cebu (UC)-Main Webmasters returned to the win column after stopping the University of the Philippines (UP)-Cebu Fighting Maroons, 67-54.

UC sealed the win behind a 19-6 attack in the third period, resulting in a double-digit cushion, 52-40, going into the final period.

It was a big recovery for the Webmasters, who came into the match reeling from a 53-59 loss to the Wildcats.

Improving to 5-3, the Webmasters were led by

Luther Gabriel Leonard (14 points), Joseph Arth Nalos (12), and Ricofer Sordilla (11), who connived for 37 points.

AJ De Los Reyes produced 18 points and Joaquin Iñigo Zaldivar had 12 points but it’s back to the drawing board for UP as its two-game winning streak got snapped.

UP fell to 2-5.(CCM)
