CALDERON CUP: Ronda pulls off shocker, waylays erstwhile unbeaten Dumanjug
RONDA hammered what was by far the biggest upset in the competition when it stunned former undefeated Dumanjug, 86-79, in the continuing action of the 1st Calderon Cup Inter-Town Under-21 Basketball Tournament on Sunday night, April 12, at the Moalboal Sports Complex.
The giant-sized upset ended Dumanjug’s unbeaten start, dropping to 3-1 (win-loss)--still good for solo top spot in Bracket B.
The Jems Carl Catingan-skippered Ronda evened its record to 2-2, quickly bouncing back from a 70-78 loss to Moalboal.
Dumanjug actually looked headed to keeping its unbeaten run going when it erected a 70-59 lead. Ronda fought back, using a searing 14-4 attack in the endgame to steal the win in the match that had 10 lead changes and 11 deadlocks.
Catingan spearheaded the massive win by tallying 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and one block. James Pulgadas chipped in 17 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
It was actually total team effort for Ronda as Charlie Bigno, Joseph Rodriguez, and John Cleirk Talaba each had 11 points while Lance Celbert Languita tossed in 10 markers.
Dumanjug was led by Silver Sabellano with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, and one steal. Raquel James Teleron contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds, Renz Nathan Villarojo wound up with 13 points and 14 assists and Jhun Miguel Telmo had 12 points.
In a Bracket A duel, Moalboal cruised to a second straight win by blasting Alcantara, 68-48.
Jhon Ryan Abines had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while also tossing in five steals and three assists. Lance Igorote and Klent Sabac backed Abines with 12 and 11 points, respectively as Moalboal improved to 3-1.
Alcantara struggled offensively as it didn’t have a double-digit scorer, leading to its fourth loss in as many games.(CCM)
