AS RISING fuel prices continue to affect commuters and transport workers, Cebu Gov. Pamela “Pam” Baricuatro said the province will explore providing fuel subsidies for drivers across the province.

“Yes, we are already preparing on that. We are in the process,” Baricuatro said, noting that officials have not yet determined a specific amount.

She urged mayors to monitor local transport fares, particularly in towns and cities where habal-habal or motorcycle taxis operate, to prevent sudden increases that could disproportionately affect commuters.

Baricuatro said her office will carefully identify which sectors will feel the greatest impact from rising fuel costs.

She highlighted fishermen, who rely on bancas for their livelihood, as especially vulnerable, along with small-scale transport operators facing higher operating expenses.

The governor said the provincial government will provide timely support to these groups, either through potential fuel subsidies or by coordinating with national aid programs.

She plans to work closely with mayors and local government units across Cebu, monitor fare adjustments, and respond swiftly to complaints or irregularities.

Baricuatro stressed that her administration must exercise proactive oversight to maintain a fair balance between protecting commuters and supporting transport operators.

Her efforts align with guidance from Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board Central Visayas, which recently reminded drivers not to implement fare increases without official Board approval.

The agency recognized drivers’ difficulties caused by rising diesel and gasoline prices but emphasized the need to protect commuters and maintain balance in the transport sector.

The governor said her office has already monitored price increases in several towns, including Catmon in northern Cebu.

Baricuatro said her approach will complement national measures.

While the Department of Social Welfare and Development has earmarked P30 billion in financial aid for drivers and other vulnerable groups.

Public utility vehicle drivers will start receiving P5,000 in fuel subsidy next week as the government moves to ease the impact of rising oil prices caused by tensions in the Middle East.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ordered the assistance to provide immediate relief to transport workers.(MyTVCebu)
