Cebu Province to send delegation to Batang Pinoy
AS PART of its comprehensive sports program, Cebu province is sending a delegation to this year’s Batang Pinoy.
It will be the first time that the province, through the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC), is sending a delegation to the multi-sport competition pitting athletes aged eight to 15.
This year’s Batang Pinoy will be held later this year in Bacolod City.
“Since we sat down as CPSC officials, we immediately buckled down to work. We have regular weekly meetings,” said CPSC Chairman Dr. Rhoel Dejano.
Under Dejano, the CPSC got the ball rolling by staging summer grassroots programs in Consolacion and San Fernando towns.
“It was successful. After the summer grassroots program, we will then have the regular grassroots program, said Dejano.
Dejano said the main purpose of the grassroots program is the identification of talents in municipalities.
The renowned sports physician underscored the importance of talent identification, saying it will identify the potential of young athletes with the goal of targeting a specific sport for aspiring athletes.
For its sports program, the CPSC will focus more on medal-rich sports.
“People are so engrossed with basketball but when it comes to competition, basketball is just one medal while track and field, gymnastics, arnis, several medals are at stake,” Dejano said.
Dejano noted that in the recent Palarong Pambansa, Region 7 managed to finish fourth after performing well in medal-rich sports.
“That is where we want to put resources and thrust. These are really the sports that will give us a lot of medals,” added Dejano, who is also the chairman of the Cebu City Sports Commission.
Apart from preparing for Batang Pinoy, the CPSC is also gearing up for several sporting events that will be soon rolled out.
One of the major events being lined up is the Governor’s Cup basketball tournament for 18 years old and below.
Also in store are football and boxing tournaments.
Dejano said the CPSC is inclined to put up 18-under tournaments.
“Because we may not know that there are kids who have yet to be discovered. These are the kids that we want to tap and identify,” Dejano said.(CCM)
