THE Benedicto College (BC) Cheetahs showed they are for real, scoring what was by far their biggest win of the season when they took down the four-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 64-55, on Thursday night, Oct. 8, at the Cebu Coliseum.

Making the victory more impressive was that the Cheetahs led from start to finish in the wire-to-wire win that shoved them to solo top spot in the team standings of the ebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 26 collegiate basketball tournament.

Benedicto improved to 7-1 (win-loss) with its third straight win that came after its 4-0 start was halted by the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars.

UV, on the other hand, dropped to 6-2 after its six-game winning run was snapped.

Prior to jumpball, the two teams shared a heartwarming moment when UV turned over a donation of P200,000 to Benedicto’s Horrace Morata.

Morata has sought financial help from the public as he is scheduled for a surgery to repair a torn ACL. The medical procedure would need Morata to shell out P600,000.

UC head coach Gary Cortes led the turnover of the financial help from CM Farm, a basketball aficionado based in Mindanao.

After the pre-game pleasantries, Benedicto buckled down to serious business and raced to a 10-5 start. The Cheetahs led by as many as 12 points en route to securing the magnificent win.

Den Rick Orgong showed the way for the Cheetahs with 16 points with Kenneth Babalcon, Jesli Faye Dela Cruz, and Serge Gabines unloading 10 markers apiece.

Kent Ivo Salarda led UV with 14 points while Raul Gentallan pitched in 12 markers.(CCM)
