CHINA has criticized the United States’ naval blockade of Iranian ports, calling it “irresponsible and dangerous” and warning it could further destabilize the region.

In a report by BBC, Beijing said the move threatens the already fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran and raises safety concerns for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. Iran had earlier restricted access to the strait following US-Israeli strikes.

The blockade took effect on Monday, a day after talks between the US and Iran broke down in Pakistan.

US President Donald Trump said the measure is meant to pressure Iran into abandoning its nuclear program.

Analysts say it may also be aimed at China, one of Iran’s largest oil buyers, to push Tehran to reopen the strait.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations described the blockade as a serious violation of the country’s sovereignty.

Some Chinese vessels have continued to pass through the strait, though it is unclear under what conditions. The blockade could disrupt China’s oil supply and have broader economic consequences.

China urged all parties to respect the ceasefire, return to dialogue, and take practical steps to restore normal shipping in the region. It also denied reports that it plans to provide air defense systems to Iran, calling the claims false.

Tensions have risen further after the US warned it could impose tariffs of up to 50 percent on Chinese goods if Beijing provides military support to Tehran.

China said it would respond with countermeasures if such actions are carried out.(Georgia Olivar, USJ-R Comm Intern)
