ASIDE from its world-famous lechon (roasted pig) and signature partner, puso (hanging rice), Cebu City is highlighting another beloved local delicacy, which is the chorizo de Cebu.

The city government will honor the original maker of chorizo de Cebu, a sweet and garlicky sausage, through its annual Heritage Awards.

In a press conference on Monday, February 17, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said chorizo de Cebu has become a recognizable symbol of the city’s rich culinary heritage.

To preserve its legacy, the local government seeks to identify and officially acknowledge the person or family behind its original recipe.

The Heritage Awards celebrate individuals, families, and institutions that have significantly contributed to Cebu’s cultural and historical identity.

This year, the city will expand the awards’ scope to include culinary heritage, with chorizo de Cebu as a key focus.

Garcia said the city will trace the delicacy’s origins and formally honor its original maker.

He emphasized that this recognition aligns with ongoing efforts to preserve Cebu’s cultural traditions.

Beyond recognition, the city government also aims to support the chorizo industry by assisting small-scale producers and preserving the authenticity of Cebu’s signature sausage.

On Monday, Garcia launched the first-ever chorizo de Cebu festival at the Plaza Sugbo Grounds, where local sausage makers showcased their products. The event will be opened until Friday, February 21.(MyTVCebu)
