CLASSES for School Year 2026–2027 opened on Monday, June 8, with the Department of Education-Central Visayas (DepEd-7) reporting that enrollment remains lower than last year.

DepEd-7, however, is expecting that the number of enrollees would increase in the coming weeks as registration continues even after the start of classes.

DepEd-7 Director Arturo Bayocot said schools across the region were ready to accommodate learners despite ongoing adjustments in enrollment data, saying schools are generally prepared for the opening.

“We are in good shape. Generally, our schools are ready based on Brigada Eskwela turnout. All students are contained in classrooms," Bayocot said in a statement read out during a press conference on Monday, June 8, at DepEd 7 office.

He added that classrooms, teachers, and learning materials were in place, while coordination with partner agencies continued to ensure safety and support for learners.

"There have been Learning Continuity Spaces (LCS) constructed, especially in areas that were hit by earthquakes like Bogo City Division. So far, all necessary preparations were provided,” Bayocot said.

Bayocot also underscored the role of the Philippine National Police, Department of Health, and Department of the Interior and Local Government in ensuring school safety and the protection of learners during school opening.

Meanwhile, DepEd-7 Information Officer Amaryllis Villarmia said the region logged about 1.3 million learners on opening day.

The figure is l lower compared to last year’s enrollment, Villarmia said.

She said Schools Division Offices are still updating and consolidating enrollment data, with the total expected to reach around 1.6 million once reporting is finalized within the month.

Villarmia explained that enrollment remains open despite the start of classes, in line with DepEd’s practice of accommodating late enrollees until the last week of June.

Early registration was also conducted in February, allowing many learners to be enrolled ahead of opening day.

She cited common reasons for late enrollment, including student transfers, financial difficulties in private schools, delayed school records, family-related concerns, relocation, and zoning issues.

DepEd-7 said school opening generally proceeded smoothly, with schools considered generally prepared, with only minor concerns addressed through its helpdesk system and no major incidents recorded on the first day.(MyTVCebu)
