ANOTHER batch of senatorial aspirants for the May 2025 midterm elections were declared by the Commission on Election (Comelec) as nuisance candidates.

The names of the candidates who were declared as nuisance may not appear in the official ballot.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said 24 names have been added to the list of nuisance candidates after two divisions of the election body ruled to deny due course and cancel the certificate of candidacy (COC) of these aspirants running for the senatorial race.

Comelec has initially declared 47 candidates nuisance, making the number of senatorial aspirants feared to be excluded from the ballot to 71. However, these nuisance cases could still be appealed by the aspirants, according to Comelec.

The poll body received a total of 183 COCs submitted during the week-long filing of COC last month. These COCs were reviewed by Comelecโ€™s different divisions.

Omnibus Election Code provides that Comelec โ€œmay motu proprio or upon a verified petition of an interested party, refuse to give due course to or cancel a certificate of candidacy if it is shown that said certificate has been filed to put the election process in mockery or disrepute or to cause confusion among the voters by the similarity of the names of the registered candidates or by other circumstances or acts which clearly demonstrate that the candidate has no bona fide intention to run for the office for which the certificate of candidacy has been filed and thus prevent a faithful determination of the true will of the electorate.โ€

The Comelec will resolve all the nuisance cases by the end of the month of November.(LAO)
