Consolacion explains decision to skip Guv’s Cup hoops

SCHEDULING conflict prevented the municipality of Consolacion from participating in the Governor’s Cup Under-18 Basketball Tournament.

Sportsman Paul Alelu Flores, the town’s consultant for sports, said Consolacion Mayor Teresa “Nene” Pepito Alegado was willing to join the province-organized Governor’s Cup but the town was also in the thick of preparations for its multi-sport Mayor’s Cup.

The Governor’s Cup, back from a six-year hiatus, will open on Sept. 26 at the Mandaue City Sports Complex.

“Our Mayor’s Cup will open on September 9. We will have 20 sporting events with basketball as the highlight. All 21 barangays will compete so that makes it difficult for us to still join the Governor’s Cup,” said Flores.

Flores added that they intend to finish the Mayor’s Cup within a month and competing in the Governor’s Cup will be an added burden especially on the part of the players competing in the basketball tournament.

“Our Mayor’s Cup is one of our biggest events. Participating in the Governor’s Cup will affect our preparations,” Flores said.

Flores coached the Consolacion Weavers when the town competed in the previous editions of the Governor’s Cup.

He emphasized that skipping the Governor’s Cup was a difficult decision to make as the town acknowledges the value of joining the tournament.

“It was difficult for us because we benefited from the Governor’s Cup. The league allowed us to showcase our homegrown talents. There were players from Consolacion who were able to play in Manila because of the Governor’s Cup,” said Flores.

Should the schedule permit, Flores said the town will be more than willing to join in the next editions of the Governor’s Cup.

“Bug-at para ni Mayor na di muapil. Gi-timbang timbang namo ang tanan. Sakit man pero sakto ra man sad,” Flores said.

Flores also appealed for understanding as some were left unhappy over the town’s decision to beg off from participating in the Governor’s Cup.

“We hope they will understand our decision. Rest assured, if we will be invited again in the future, we will surely join,” said Flores.(CCM)
