Dumanjug, Ginatilan start strong in Calderon Cup volleyball tourney

DUMANJUG and Ginatilan posted contrasting wins for a strong start in the 1st Calderon Cup 21-Under Inter-Municipalities Women's Volleyball Tournament on Friday, May 22, in Badian, Cebu.

Dumanjug labored hard before beating Alcantara, 25-6, 17-25, 15-13, while Ginatilan handled Ronda in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16.

Kian Meg Belocura powered Dumanjug with seven points spiked by six attacks and one service ace.

Dumanjug was heavily challenged just as it threatened to cruise after scoring a string of points that allowed them to break free from a 6-all standoff and led, 11-6, in the deciding set.

Alcantara, however, charged back and evened the count at 11-all.

Dumanjug scored two straight points to build a crucial 13-11 lead--a cushion that Alcantara found too much to overcome.

Ginatilan, on the other hand, banked on Gina Mae Pandanon to make short work of Ronda.

Pandanon scored three attacks and two service aces for a five-point performance.
