Eala moves up in WTA rankings

ALEX Eala will start her campaign in the Italian Open with an improved ranking in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).

The Filipina tennis sensation moved from No. 44 to No. 42 despite failing to complete a deep run in her first three clay tournaments in the year.

Set to turn 21 years old this month, Eala saw action in Linz, Stuttgart, and Madrid but couldn’t get past the second in all occasions.

Still, Eala earned 1,285 points from those stints, enough to shove her two rungs higher in the WTA rankings.

At the Italian Open, a WTA 1000 tournament formally known as the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, Eala will start her campaign against Poland’s Magdalena Frech on Wednesday, May 6.

It will be the first time that Eala and Frech will against each other.

The 28-year-old Frech is currently ranked No. 45 but previously went up as high as No. 22. The winner in the Eala -Frech match will next face China’s Xinyu Wang, who earned a first-round bye.(CCM)
