FOLLOWING her historic championship run in Mexico and a strong showing in the ongoing Sao Paulo Open in Brazil, Alex Eala is set to post a new career-high in world rankings.

In the live Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings, Eala has moved up to No. 55, one rung higher of her previous career-high of No. 56.

Heading to the Sao Paulo Open, the 20-year-old Eala was at No. 61, a spot she secured after winning her first-ever WTA title via the Guadalajara 125 Open in Mexico.

Eala set her previous career-high of No. 56 by reaching the championship round of the Eastbourne Open in Great Britain last June. From No. 56, Eala fell to as low as No. 75 before climbing up in the rankings again.

Eala could further rise in the WTA rankings as she is poised for a big finish in the ongoing Sau Paulo Open. The Filipino tennis sensation has pulled off three dominating wins that propelled her to the tournament’s quarterfinal round.

Eala’s quarterfinal opponent is Janice Tjen, a 23-year-old Indonesian who is also on the rise.

Tjen is currently ranked No. 130 in the world–a career-high.

The Eala-Tjen duel is scheduled to start at midnight (Philippine time), Saturday, September 13.(CCM)
