“TO my mind, lies, if repeated over time, will give a semblance of truth,” said Jaime Santiago, announcing his irrevocable resignation as director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
The former police officer, prosecutor, and judge cited persistent intrigues and a smear campaign against him as the main reasons for stepping down.
Santiago said he would leave his post once a successor is appointed, as confirmed in his resignation letter addressed to President Marcos and routed through Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.
Malacañang on Saturday, August 16, confirmed Santiago’s resignation.
“Confirmed. He submitted his resignation,” Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said in a text message to reporters per a repoet by Manila Bulletin.
Santiago was appointed NBI chief on June 14 last year. In his letter, he praised the President’s anti-corruption drive and reflected on his mission to rid the bureau of corrupt elements.
“With my experience as a former police officer, prosecutor and judge, I steered the Bureau with my best leg forward – regaining the trust and confidence of the Filipino people, the media with the Bureau,” he wrote.
He said the smear campaign began after he submitted a courtesy resignation, a procedure required of government officials following the elections.
“Detractors and those who have sinister interest in my position incessantly make moves to blemish my reputation,” Santiago said.
Despite resigning, he expressed gratitude to President Marcos and promised to continue supporting the administration.(MyTVCebu)
