Gilas U23 off to winless start in World Cup 3X3
THE Gilas Pilipinas men’s U23 team got off to a rough start in the FIBA 3x3 World Cup after dropping their first two games on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Hongshan Riverfront Park in Wuhan, China.
Gilas faltered in its first game against New Zealand, 11-21, before stumbling against Spain, 16-21.
The faulty start sent Gilas to the bottom part of the standings in Pool B.
Against New Zealand, Gilas made the game close early as it stayed within 7-1. New Zealand, however, broke away behind a 5-1 attack and went on to close out the match with still 3:51 left in the clock.
John Earl Medina led Gilas with six points and three rebounds.
Gilas put up a tougher stand against Spain but succumbed to crucial errors down the stretch that denied them from barging into the win column.
Cabs Cabonilas and Malcolm Tyler combined for 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss against Spain.
The country is also off to a shaky start in the distaff side where Gilas women’s team's is also off to a 0-2 start.(CCM)
