SPEAKER Martin Romualdez is poised to maintain his grip on the leadership of the House of Representatives, with 278 lawmakers already pledging their support for his re-election in the 20th Congress.

House Deputy Speaker David Suarez confirmed the broad backing, signaling Romualdez's likely re-election as Speaker.

Among the 278 signatories, four of the six Liberal Party (LP) members in the House have joined the growing coalition, bringing the total number of supporters to 285.

Suarez noted that this broad-based support reflects Romualdez's increasing influence across party lines.

“This consensus reflects not only Speaker Romualdez's leadership capabilities but also the commitment to effective governance as the Marcos administration enters its second term,” Suarez said in a statement to Philstar. “He has earned the trust of both current and incoming members through his principled, results-oriented leadership.”

The coalition’s support now extends beyond Romualdez’s traditional allies, incorporating diverse political groups such as Lakas-CMD, the Nacionalista Party, the National Unity Party, the Nationalist People’s Coalition, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc.

Suarez pointed out that Romualdez has consistently brought lawmakers together to pass meaningful legislation, and the current unity in the House reflects a shared commitment to stability and effective governance. Despite this, the political climate remains fluid.

Earlier this month, Vice President Sara Duterte hinted that her brother, Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte, might aim for either the speakership or the minority leader position, suggesting a possible challenge to the Marcos administration.(MyTVCebu)
