OVER 10,000 performers from 51 contingents showcased their respective festivals, and after more than 13 hours of competition, it was the delegation from the City of Naga that shone the brightest.

Naga’s Dagitab Festival or the Festival of Lights was crowned champion in the grand ritual showdown of the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo 2024 on Sunday, August 25, at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC).

Naga’s Dagitab Festival is celebrated every December in Naga. Its festival name is derived from the Cebuano word for light or electricity, and highlights six key elements: light, progress, industry, tourism, economic development, and employment.

Sharing the limelight with Naga was Carcar City, whose Kabkaban Festival won the Best in Street Dancing award.

The municipality of Consolacion, showcasing its Sarok Festival, won the Best in Float award while the Best Carrozza accolade went to the town of Bantayan.

Prizes for this year’s winners have yet to be announced as of this writing. Last year’s total cash prizes reached P30 million with the grand ritual showdown champion getting a whopping P5 million.

The participating contingents represented the province’s various towns and cities. The provincial government gave P2 million each to the contingents as a subsidy for their participation. Participating towns coming from Camotes Island and Bantayan Island got P2.5 million as they needed to spend more for their travel to the mainland.

The festival started around 2 p.m. with street dancing. It ended past 3 a.m. at the CCSC where more than 17,000 people watched the ritual showdown, police said.

Despite the huge crowd, the holding of the festival was generally peaceful, said Lt. Col. Janette Rafter, deputy director for administration of the Cebu City Police Office.

Rafter said no crime was reported during the duration of the festival.

Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia commended the participating contingents for answering her challenge to level up.

“Mao’y nakanindot kaayo kay they all answered my challenge nga level up each time. And that’s the way, the only way that we can push Cebu to even further heights," she said.

With the contingents turning in improved performances, Garcia described this year’s competition as anybody’s game.

“It no longer mattered whether you are a contingent from the city or from a town, a small town at that. It didn’t matter if you came from the mainland or from an island, the level of performance really stepped up,” Garcia said.
