“NO reason to resign.” That was the firm message from Speaker Martin Romualdez’s spokesperson, Robert Ace Barbers, as rumors of the House chief’s possible exit circulated outside Congress on Wednesday night, September 10.

Barbers quickly dismissed the speculation, highlighting that Romualdez continues to enjoy overwhelming support inside the chamber. Roughly 90 percent of the more than 300 members back him, reaffirming their confidence in his leadership. He added that most calls for a leadership change come from outside the House, not from lawmakers themselves.

Barbers noted that the members’ support reflects the trust placed in them by their constituents, which in turn strengthens Romualdez’s position in the House. This widespread backing, he said, provides a solid reason for the Speaker to remain in his post.

On the resignation rumors, Barbers said he had not heard of any such plans and considered the idea illogical. “Kasi bakit? Habang 90 percent ng kasamahan mo ay naniniwala at sumusuporta sayo, then you will resign? Bakit?” he asked in a Manila Bulletin report.

Romualdez also serves as president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), which holds 111 seats in the House—about a third of the chamber.(MyTVCebu)
