A SUPER typhoon could be on the horizon as ‘Saudel’ is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) today, according to state weather forecasters.

Once it enters PAR, typhoon Saudel will be given the local name Obet by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Obet will be the 15th tropical cyclone to enter PAR this year and the fourth this month, following Luis, Maymay and Neneng.

Saudel was last located 1,950 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, based on Pagasa’s latest weather bulletin yesterday. It was packing maximum sustained winds of 165 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 205 kph while moving northwestward at 30 kph.

The typhoon is expected to make only a brief entry into PAR before exiting the following day. Despite its short stay, however, it is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, which could affect weather conditions in parts of the country.

Meanwhile, Neneng remained outside PAR and was last located 520 kilometers north of Itbayat, Batanes.

Neneng was packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gusts of up to 70 kph while moving southwestward at 25 kph. It is not expected to re-enter PAR.

Another tropical depression was also being monitored 1,265 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon. It was packing winds of 55 kph and gusts of up to 70 kph while moving east-northeastward at 15 kph.

The tropical depression is not expected to enter PAR.(MyTVCebu)
