Super typhoon ‘Bavi’ may enter PAR this week
SUPER Typhoon Bavi continues to move westward over the Philippine Sea and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by midweek, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
Once inside the country's monitoring area, the cyclone will be assigned the local name Inday.
Despite its expected entry into PAR, current forecasts indicate that Bavi is not likely to make landfall in the Philippines. Weather forecasters said the powerful cyclone may only pass near the country's northernmost islands, including Batanes, although its projected path and strength remain subject to change.
In its 3 a.m. weather bulletin on Sunday, Pagasa reported that Bavi was estimated at around 2,700 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas. The super typhoon was moving west at 15 kilometers per hour, carrying maximum sustained winds of 195 kph and gusts reaching 240 kph.
Meanwhile, the easterlies are expected to continue affecting parts of the country, bringing cloudy conditions with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Cagayan Valley, the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Aurora, Quezon, and Dinagat Islands. Elsewhere, including Metro Manila, generally fair weather will prevail, although isolated rain showers and thunderstorms may still develop due to localized weather conditions.
Pagasa reminded the public to stay updated through its official advisories, as sudden downpours associated with thunderstorms could cause flash floods or landslides in flood- and landslide-prone communities. ( Zoe Casas PIT Comm Intern)
