A LITTLE-KNOWN Filipino boxer is set to embark on what could be the biggest fight of his fledgling career.

Jayson Vayson, the pride of Agusan del Sur, has earned a shot at the unified World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organization (WBO) and The Ring minimumweight belts of Puerto Rican champion Oscar Collazo.

The two will clash on September 20 at the Fantasy Springs and Sports Casino in Indio, California.

The 27-year-old Vayson was already in the thick of preparations for a title eliminator fight against Boholano Regie Suganob before the golden opportunity to contend for Collazo’s belt came.

Vayson is on a four-fight winning streak. He has 14 wins, one loss, and one draw with eight of his victories coming by way of knockout.

If successful, Vayson will become just the third active Filipino world boxing champion. Current Filipino world boxing champions are Pedro Taduran and Melvin Jerusalem.

Collazo poses a great challenge for Vayson. The hard-hitting Puerto Rican champion is unbeaten in 12 fights with nine KO wins.

Interestingly, one of Collazo’s victims is Jerusalem.

Collazo knocked Jerusalem out in the seventh round in their May 2023 duel to snatch the WBO world minimumweight belt.

Jerusalem bounced back from that stinging loss, winning his last four fights en route to becoming the WBC world minimumweight champion.

Jerusalem has managed to defend the WBC title twice.(CCM)
