UV cruises to 5th straight win, earns piece of lead

THE rampage continued for the four-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers after they nipped the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers, 70-63, on Tuesday night, September 29, in the collegiate division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 26 basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Gary Cortes-coached UV raced to a blistering 31-13 start and never looked back as it led by as many as 24 points in the one-sided match.

The Panthers made the game a bit interesting in the final quarter but the Green Lancers made sure there was no meltdown to pocket a fifth straight win.

The victory allowed the Green Lancers to tie the University of San Carlos Warriors at the No. 1 spot with similar 5-1 (win-loss) records.

Interestingly, UV’s lone loss came at the hands of USC, 68-81. The Green Lancers have not lost since that shock 13-point defeat to the Warriors.

Rovello Robles produced 10 points–the only UV player to score in double figures. Having a lone twin-digit scorer hardly mattered for UV as 14 of the 15 Green Lancers who played managed to score at least two points.

Christian Illut scored 11 points and Ashly Howard Dennison finished with 10 markers for the Panthers, who absorbed their sixth loss in seven outings.(CCM)
