ONE of the league’s elite playmakers has taken a major role as LA Tenorio has been named as the new head coach of the Magnolia Hotshots in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Tenorio replaced Chito Victolero, taking over a Magnolia team that has not won a championship since the 2018 Governors’ Cup.
Tenorio still saw action for the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the league’s recently concluded 49th season and it remains unclear if he will act as a playing coach for Magnolia.
Aside from the coaching change, Magnolia also promoted Jason Webb from being one of the team’s assistant coaches to being the team governor. Webb replaced Rene Pardo, who recently retired.
The fourth overall pick by the San Miguel Beermen in the 2006 PBA Draft, Tenorio got his feet wet in terms of coaching when he was named as coach of Gilas Youth.
The 41-year-old Tenorio made an instant impact when he guided Gilas Youth to the championship in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) U16 Qualifiers last June.
Tenorio will have the gargantuan task of turning things around for Magnolia, which won a grand slam in 2014 but has not won a championship since bagging the 2018 Governors’ Cup crown.
Since that title run, Magnolia made it to the finals thrice but lost to sister-team San Miguel in the 2019 Philippine Cup and 2023-24 Commissioner's Cup and then to TNT in the 2021 All-Filipino Cup.(CCM)
