CARLOS Yulo and sister Elaiza will lead a group of elite Filipino gymnasts who will compete in next week’s 53rd Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Aside from the Yulo siblings, other Filipino gymnasts seeing action in the competition are Southeast Asian Games medalists Juancho Besana, John Ivan Cruz and Justine Ace De Leon, as well as Haylee Garcia and fellow Paris Olympians Aleah Finnegan and Emma Malabuyo.
The tournament will kick off with the three-day qualification round on Sunday, Oct. 19. Finals will be held from Oct. 22-25.
The 25-year-old Carlos is arguably the brightest star competing in the tournament with two World Championship gold medals–in floor exercise (2019 Stuttgart) and vault (2021 Kitakyushu)--tucked under his belt. The diminutive double Olympic gold medalist also owns two silver medals in parallel bars (2021 Kitakyushu) and vault (2022 Liverpool), along with two bronzes in floor exercise (2018 Doha) and parallel bars (2022 Liverpool).
The Filipinos are expected to get stiff competition from Japanese athletes. Bannering Japan are reigning champions Daiki Hashimoto, Hiroto Ishizawa, Kiichi Kaneta, Kazuki Minami, Oka Shinnosuke, and Tomoharu Tsunogai.
Also to watch out for is Jake Jarman, a British gymnast of Filipino descent, who pocketed gold in vault in the tournament’s previous edition.(CCM)
