ELECTRONIC bikes (e-bikes) are now prohibited on Mandaue City streets in a move that seeks to address growing traffic and safety concerns.
Hyll Retuya, acting head of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), explained that the decision was made to prevent potential issues before they become more widespread.
Although the number of e-bikes in the city is still relatively low, reports of their increasing use prompted early intervention.
Initially, traffic enforcers will issue verbal warnings to violators. However, Retuya confirmed that e-bikes found operating illegally will be impounded and will not be returned. Those caught will also face fines of up to P1,000.
The ban, which took effect on Tuesday, November 26, primarily targets e-bikes used for public transport, which are often modified to carry passengers, and aims to ensure fairness with registered tricycle operators who follow the city’s regulations.
Retuya stressed that e-bikes must adhere to the same requirements, including registration and driver licensing.
Private e-bike users will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, while traditional trisikads will still be allowed in barangays with narrow streets, but remain prohibited on major roads for traffic flow and safety.
The new policy is in line with national efforts, including the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s ban on tricycles along national highways and the Land
Transportation Office’s suspension of light electric vehicle registrations.(MyTVCebu)
