WHAT was expected to be a dogfight turned into a one-sided affair as the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles routed the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 83-59, in the high school division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) Season 25 basketball tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Cebu Coliseum.
The victory–their third straight–was crucial in Ateneo’s bid for a fifth straight crown as it gave them a twice-to-beat incentive in the semifinal round.
Ateneo became the first semifinalist after finishing its elimination-round campaign with eight wins and two losses.
The loss, on the other hand, was a big one for the Dragons.
CEC dropped to 7-3 (win-loss), still good for third place and well inside the Top 4 rankings.
However, the Dragons could still be dislodged from their current ranking as two other squads are still capable of tying their record.
The Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens and the University of Cebu (UC) Main Baby Webmasters are tied for fourth and fifth spots with similar 6-3 records.
Occupying the second place is UC Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue with seven wins and two losses.
Tournament format states that only the top four teams after the eliminations will advance to the semifinals with the top two seeds owning win-once bonuses against their lower-ranked foes.(CCM)
