CEBU is poised to attract more international meetings, conventions, and business events as new venues, improved infrastructure, and strong stakeholder collaboration boost its position as a leading MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination.

Speaking during the Cebu Business Month 2026 MICE Tourism Summit on Thursday, June 25, Department of Tourism-Central Visayas (DOT-7) Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Riza Marie Macaibay said Cebu already possesses many of the qualities sought by global event organizers, including excellent air connectivity, experienced tourism professionals, modern services, and a reputation for hospitality.

She said the province is well-positioned to benefit from the rapid growth of the MICE industry in the Asia-Pacific region, which is projected to remain the fastest-growing market globally over the next several years.

Macaibay emphasized that Cebu’s competitive edge extends beyond infrastructure, citing its rich culture, skilled workforce, and strong cooperation among government agencies, tourism stakeholders, and the private sector.

The tourism official highlighted several major developments expected to expand Cebu’s hosting capacity, including the upcoming Mactan Expo Center, SMX Convention Center, and Cebu Arena.

Together, these facilities will significantly increase available event space and allow the province to accommodate larger conventions, exhibitions, concerts, sporting events, and international summits.

She revealed that DOT-7 is already working with industry partners to bring major events to Cebu once the new venues become operational.

The agency is also supporting capacity-building programs and international marketing efforts to strengthen Cebu’s bid for future global gatherings, including MICECON 2027.

Despite the positive outlook, Macaibay acknowledged challenges such as traffic congestion, infrastructure upgrades, waste management, security, and workforce development.

“Our people remain our greatest asset,” she said, stressing the importance of continued investment in training and skills development for tourism and MICE professionals.

Meanwhile, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Regan Rex King said Cebu’s business and tourism sectors are working closely to position the province as a premier destination for high-value tourism.

He noted that, aside from MICE, Cebu is also promoting sports tourism and destination weddings to attract more visitors and generate greater economic opportunities across the region.(MyTVCebu)
