PEER pressure pushed him to the edge—literally.
An 18-year-old biker from Cordova town, Cebu admitted he gave in to the urging of his friends to perform a dangerous road stunt that nearly put his life at risk and sparked public outrage after the footage went viral online.
The teen, accompanied by his sister, personally appeared before Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on Wednesday, June 18, to apologize and explain his actions after a video surfaced showing him swerving into the path of an oncoming truck along the highway in Barangay Marigondon.
“Gara-gara ra to, gisulsulan ra ko sa akong mga kauban nga bikers,” he told Chan.
The stunt, which occurred between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on June 16, drew immediate attention from the mayor, who shared the footage on social media and asked the public to help identify the cyclist.
The teen said he didn’t know his friend had recorded the act and was shocked when the video began circulating online.
“Wala kahibaw nga gi videohan ko nila mao to na shock ko pagkakita nako nga nag viral na ko sa video,” he said.
Chan said it wasn’t the first time he had received reports of similar stunts from the same biker. He reminded the teen that such acts not only endanger himself but also pose risks to motorists.
“Dili lang makaamong sa imoha, maka among ka sa ubang motorista,” the mayor told him.
The biker said he had performed another similar stunt earlier this year involving a public utility jeepney.
He admitted that he began trying out risky maneuvers only in 2025, despite having been into biking for five years.
His sister said their family has long discouraged him from biking due to his accident-prone behavior.
She added that they were shocked and angered when they saw the viral footage, and emotions flared at home, leading to a confrontation between him, his brother, and father.
“Wala man jud mi magkuwang sa paghimangno ana iyang bike-bike,” she said.
Chan, while choosing not to pursue legal action at this time, warned that any repeat offenses would be referred to the city’s legal team.
“Pwede gyud nato siya ma filan og kaso. We will refer this to our legal team, para sa maong gibuhat nga nakabutang sa pelegro sa kinatibok-an sa katawhan,” he said.
He also reminded the teen of the importance of listening to parents and practicing safe biking habits.
Chan acknowledged that biking is a passion for many, but stressed that it should not be practiced in a reckless manner.
The teenager shared his decision to return to school after a year-long break. He also expressed his goal of finding a job to save up for an aircraft maintenance course.(MyTVCebu)
