DJANGO Bustamante showed he still has a lot left in his tank, showing steady nerves down the stretch to defeat Germany’s Can Salim, 11-9, and capture the 29th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Championship crown Thursday, February 20, in Las Vegas, USA.
The 62-year-old Filipino pool legend displayed tremendous composure, never panicking when Salim forged a 9-all standoff.
Bustamante dominated the next two frames to seal the victory and bag the $2,700 (roughly P156,393) grand prize.
Bustamante became the seventh player who has Filipino roots to win the annual competition.
Bustamante earned a bye after securing wins over Joseph Crugnale (8-3), Jimmy De Sousa (8-2), Brian Bagay (8-2), and Kashton Keeton (8-4) in the earlier rounds.
Bustamante sustained his fiery form and scored a tight 8-6 win over Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulayan, 8-6, to advance to the Final 4.
Bustamante is still in contention in another Las Vegas tournament, but a double championship doesn’t look so bright for him.
After scoring a win to start his campaign in the Las Vegas 10-Ball Open, Bustamante lost to German Ralf Souquet, 2-4, 3-4,.
The defeat sent Bustamante to the losers' bracket, putting him in a must-win situation.(CCM)
